From Pipeline Failure to Field Confirmation in 26 Minutes
How PipeSense PipeTest supported rapid failure detection and location identification during hydrostatic testing in West Texas.
During a hydrostatic test on a 2.6-mile section of 20-inch pipeline in West Texas, an unexpected failure occurred at 3:35 AM when pressure suddenly dropped from 1,139 PSI. With PipeSense PipeTest continuously monitoring pressure conditions, the system detected the event and issued a dashboard leak alert within seconds.
Using real-time pressure data, PipeTest generated an estimated failure location, providing field crews with actionable information to guide their investigation. By 4:02 AM, crews had confirmed the failure site, just 26 minutes after the initial event. Following repairs, the pipeline underwent another hydrostatic test, successfully completing a 25-hour monitoring period with no leaks detected.
This project highlights the importance of reliable monitoring and accurate failure location estimation during critical pipeline testing operations. By delivering timely alerts and actionable insights, PipeTest helps operators respond efficiently, minimize uncertainty, and make informed decisions in the field.
